Tactile Perception and Learning

Research in Diamond’s Tactile Perception and Learning Lab (TPLL) is aimed at understanding the neuronal basis of our subjective sensory experiences.  We train rats to feel stimuli through their whiskers and to make judgements about the stimuli, which they express by making a choice to obtain a reward. All the while, we acquire neuronal activity and then apply computational approaches to specify the relationships between neuronal firing and perceptual experience. Whenever feasible, we conduct experiments in rats and humans with parallel design and analysis, using EEG instead of microelectrodes.
